Rare 8-days Art
Deco Gold-filled
Cornioley Pocket Watch
- circa
1930
This
rare gold-filled 8-days (rare to find 8
days in a p/w) open-face pocket watch was made in
Switzerland circa 1930.
Dial: The
dial has black Arabic numerals with outer minute divisions and blued moon hands. The subsidiary
seconds register at 9 o'clock (it is unusual to find subsidiary seconds at
the 9, which makes this a valuable collector’s item). The
dial is signed “Cornioley 8 days”.
Movement: The watch has a mechanical crown wind
twin barrel 8-day movement and is held in an Art Deco case. It has a
milled edge and foliate bezels, verso hinged at 6 o'clock. It is engraved with a
symmetrical engine turned engraving in an art deco style. The movement of this
watch, with its two-barrel gearing on the same pinion, is based on the
principle first employed by Breguet on marine chronometers. With two barrels
acting in opposite directions, the opposing direction of their force bears
equally on the pivots, which suffer much less strain and friction, allowing the
use of a much stronger mainspring to supply enough power for the 8-day
movement.
This
watch is in good working condition, but we cannot guarantee the long-term
precision on 8 days and regularity of an antique pocket watch.
