Claude Cauquil - 'Les Fronts Bombés' - acrylic on canvas.

41 x 27cm

1 of 4 of a larger serirs of Claude Cauquil 2006 acrylics on canvas commemorating the 1974 protests in Martinique.

These 2006 paintings follow on from the 2005 series originally presented in 2005 at the CMAC Scne Nationale, inspired by photographs from books such as 'I Have a dream' or 'Freedom' with crowds of demonstrators marching in Washington as part of the fight against civil rights.

They comemorate the events that took place in the city of Lorraine in the north of Martinique on February 14, 1974.

In February 1974 the plantation workers protested demanding a wage increase which their management refused resulting in a march on February 14 where one protestor died and many injured from indiscriminate gendarme gunfire.

Cauquil's body of work is based on photographic sources, some from the archives of the 'Journal Justice' (which is particularly inspired by) and other publications, web screenshots and freeze frames from newsreels of relevant social events in modern 20th century history.

His style takes influences from Jasper Jones, Rothko, Bacon, the solarized kitsch photos of the 70s, all combined with a pronounced taste for Caravaggism and statuary.

After obtaining a bachelor's degree in philosophy, Cauquil studied applied art at the cole Normale Suprieure d'Enseignement Technique, before continuing with a Master's degree in aesthetics at the University of Paris in 1985.

His figurative work portrays everything related to social struggles which comes from his childhood experiences. The crowd scenes are omnipresent in his work, perceived as an entity, an individual on its own, a wave, powerful and unstable, reassuring and frightening. It brings together the anonymous who make history, the unpredictable who redistributes the cards indefinitely.
