Bei "Kodama" handelt es sich um das fnfte Album der Blackgaze-Pioniere Alcest. Das franzsische Duo feiert darauf eine furiose Rckkehr zum stilistischen Maximalismus der frhen Verffentlichungen, ohne dabei das unermdliche Streben nach neuen Klngen und unverbrauchten Ideen aufzugeben."Kodama" ist das japanische Wort fr 'Baumgeist' und 'Echo', und mit seiner Struktur, Dynamik und dem Breitwandsound ist "Kodama" in der Tat eine Art Echo des 2010 erschienenen Alcest-Klassikers "cailles de Lune". Allerdings handelt es sich hierbei um kein schlichtes Back-to-the-roots-Album: Die Band legt auf ihrem neuen Werk mehr Schlagkraft, Rhythmus und organisches Gespr an den Tag als je zuvor. Einerseits deutlich beeinflusst von Bands wie The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Dinosaur Jr., Grimes und The Cure, offenbart "Kodama" sich andererseits als das 'japanische Album' von Alcest, da es entscheidend von der Kunst und Kultur Japans inspiriert ist. Ursprnglich angeregt von Hayao Miyazakis Anime-Film "Prinzessin Mononoke" greift "Kodama" das Schicksal der Titelheldin auf und dreht sich im Kern um das Gefhl der Nichtzugehrigkeit: das Leben zwischen den Welten, zwischen Stadt und Natur, zwischen dem krperlichen und dem spirituellen Dasein. Diese Dualitt spielt auch eine entscheidende Rolle bei der visuellen Gestaltung des Albums, fr die das franzsische Graphik-Design-Duo Frtifem verantwortlich zeichnet. Das Bildmaterial zollt japanischen Illustratoren wie Takato Yamamoto Tribut, arbeitet mit kontrastierenden Elementen wie Natur/Urbanitt, Jugend/Tod, Weiblichkeit/Tierhaftigkeit und verbindet poetische Aspekte mit dunkleren, die man aus Alcests frheren Werken nicht kennt
