Cleopatra fragment
Ptolemaic period - 305 - 30 B.C.E
This very realistic fragment replica shows one of the best known surviving portraits of the legendary Cleopatra - the last Queen of Egypt. This was Ptolemaic style at its finest with typical high relief jutting above the surface plain of the stone displaying intricate details of face and costurme details. Over neatly plaited rows of braided hair, she wears the vulture headress only worn by Queens and some Goddesses such as Mut and Isis. The wings can clearly be seen draping downwards over the hair offering symbolic protection.
Cleopatra was thought of as the living image of Isis and on her debut in Rome, she was received in full splendour in the guise of the Goddess.
