The Trowenna Sea
by Witi Ihimaera
a novel
The little-known fact that Maori prisoners served as convicts
in 1840s Tasmania provides the inspiration for this
engrossing, sweeping new novel by Witi Ihimaera.
It tells the story of Hohepa Te Umuroa, who was convicted of insurrection
and transported as a convict to Tasmania with four other Maori in the 1840s.
