PRIOR TO PURCHASE, BUYERS ARE REQUIRED TO READ AND AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING:

How to get the most out of a B4 Broadcast Lens

Broadcast lenses are designed for professional 2/3" video cameras with 3 CCD type sensors. When adapted to single sensor cameras, there are certain things to keep in mind to get the best results from these lenses.

B4 lenses are not consumer lenses and we expect the buyer to be educated about the use, features and functions before buying. So that you can make an informed decision about the use of this lens on your digital camera, please read and understand the following advice and disclaimer section prior to purchase. Most of your questions should be answered in this section:

  1. An adapter is required and included with your purchase. The adapter is positioned between the lens and your camera and provides the proper distance to guarantee infinity focus. The built-in 2x extender on the lens is required to cover the Micro Four Thirds sensor (avoid vignetting).

  2. There is no electronic contact or communication between the lens and camera. Therefor there is no auto focus or auto iris function. Iris and focus are performed manually on the lens itself which is standard in the professional film industry. Focus is smooth and dampened and positioned ergonomically for easy rotation. The lens has geared rings that can be controlled by standard follow focus equipment.

  3.  The zoom may be turned manually, or optionally you can power the zoom for even smoother zoom racking. We sell the 12 pin Hirose cable and batteries in our eBay store to enable you to power the zoom rocker. There is a control on the bottom of the lens that switches it between manual and power zoom.

  4.  There is an 8 pin port on the bottom of the lens to plug in a remote zoom control. We do not carry any remote zoom equipment.

  5.  You cannot correct lens aberrations such as distortion, light fall-off or CA internally in your camera as you might for a native DSLR lens from Panasonic (or Nikon, Canon, etc.) Lens aberrations can still be corrected in post production, however.

  6. Do not expect "prime lens" perfection out of a 17x parfocal zoom lens! As with any vintage or legacy lens, there may be some "character" to the lens. For example there may be some softness when used wide open. The easiest way to sharpen up the image is to simply stop down the lens! Optimum sharpness is achieved by f/5.6 and excellent sharpness continues through f/8 and f/11. Pixel peepers please note: some softness or CA esp. near the corners when wide open is normal and will not be considered a "defect" for purposes of returning the lens!

  7.  Backfocus can be set at the rear of the lens. This keeps the lens parfocal (no need to refocus when zooming). To set the back focus:
    A. Loosen the backfocus screw near the mount. B. Zoom in fully and focus. C. Zoom out to wide angle and turn the backfocus ring until best focus is achieved. Repeat B and C until lens is parfocal.

  8.  Best image quality is generally at the middle ranges of the zoom. By avoiding the extreme end of the telephoto range and the extreme wide angle end if possible, you can stay within the middle ranges which are the "sweet areas" of the lens.

  9.  We have noticed that the best image quality is achieved when the lens is used at somewhat close distances (as opposed to infinity or landscape shooting). This is because these lenses were designed for situations like interview situations where the subject is at a fairly close range.

  10. Center your subject in the frame! The center of the image is where the optimum sharpness is—use it. Good photographers/videographers place one main subject in the center of the frame to draw the viewer's eye to the subject. Don't put distracting elements in the corners of your frame. Instead, leave the corners for background / out of focus areas.

  11.  Use good lighting! All professional cameramen know that good lighting is essential to good image quality. Don't go unprepared to shoot in a dark room and expect professional results. Utilize good lighting which allows you to stop your lens down a bit for the best image sharpness.

  12.  Finally, join a user group. There are several user groups dedicated to shooting professional movies and video on today's DSLR cameras. I can't possibly cover all the finer details of setting up a DSLR rig but there are lots of people willing to provide help and advice on groups such as DVXUser and the 'B4 on M43' Facebook group on.
