Benson ES-355 Style ‘Gold Burst’ Double Cutaway Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar. 

Specs 

The guitar is made from maple, and it's a replica of the Gibson ES-355. It includes a pickguard, four dials (two tone, two volume), and a three-way switch to choose between the bridge humbucker, the neck humbucker, or both. The neck is inlayed with trapezoid pearl as can be seen in the pictures and the guitar is finished in ‘Gold burst’ with a gloss lacquer. The tuners are die-cast chrome, and the headstock bears the Benson name.  

Condition 

I bought this guitar in 2016 as my first semi-hollow body. Now, many years on I have a good collection of semi-hollow body guitars and have grown to love the sound and tone they produce. As a result, it is now time to sell my Benson. 

This Guitar has been well looked after, the body is free of imperfections including scratches or nicks to the lacquer. There are no cracks or damaged to the neck or body. The neck is straight, and the strings are Ernie ball 13s, although I would recommend buying a new set, in addition to this purchase. All knobs, switches, input jack and pickups are tight and operate smoothly. The pickguard was replaced a few years ago with an original style to keep the timeless look. The lacquer still holds a shine and looks great.  

History 

The ES-355 was first manufactured in 1958 and introduced by the renowned American Guitar manufacturer Gibson. The semi-hollow body was a ground breaking instrument of the time, combining the warm, resonant tone of a hollow body with the sustain and feedback resistance of a solid-body guitar. Equipped with a pair of humbucker pickups, the ES-335 delivered a versatile range of tones, from smooth jazz to gritty blues and rock ‘n’ roll. 

Whilst there is little information online about the company Benson, it is likely that the name is inspired by the famous American Jazz player George Benson who was prominent in his use of the semi-hollow body guitar.  

Playability  

This guitar is fantastic at dialling in high gain over large watt amplifiers and has been a pleasure to play in practice. The sound is similar to a Les Paul with a more distinctive colourful resonance. The heavy maple neck and 2x t-type humbucker pickups produce a tone that I have fallen in love with over the years, and the classic yet versatile design of this guitar contributes to its exceptional playability characteristics. It stands out in my collection and has the tendency to draw people in with its timeless classic design.
