ADENIUM OBESUM, DESERT ROSE

It is an evergreen or drought- decidous succulent shrub with unusual basal caudex and thick stems. Decorative leathery dark green leaves are to 15 cm long. The 5 petalled flowers are tubular to 5 cm long and to 6 cm wide, resemble those of other related genera such as Plumeria and Nerium. The flowers tend to be red and pink, often with a whitish blush outward of the throat. This is a very ornamental houseplant and bonsai in temperate rgions. It requires a sunny location and minimum indoor temperature in winter of 10 C. Adenium is easy to grow in cactus substrate and watered carefully like other succulents. Very showy even at a young age. This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
