David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter, famous for his iconic painting and sketches of Egypt and the Holy Land made during lengthy travels there beginning in 1838.  Roberts produced lithographic plates from the paintings that were sold by subscription – and were tremendously popular.  In this set, the Egypt volume contains 124 reproductions of the lithographs; the Holy Land volume 123.  Each lithograph (except for those of monuments no longer existing) is accompanied by a photograph showing the original view in modern day, as well as narrative about the monument and Roberts’ experience of it. A monumental set. Weighs 13.5 pounds.
