After only five months of construction, the "Colombo Express" was christened on April 11, 2005 as the largest container motor ship (CMS) in the world. The ship sailing under the German flag for Hapag-Lloyd is still a superlative. With a length of 335.47 m, a width of 42.94 m and a height of 60.50 m, it is the size of three football pitches. With a load capacity of 103,800 t, it has a slot capacity for 8,749 20-foot standard containers. The ship's diesel has an output of 68,640 kW (93,324 hp) and enables the ship to reach a speed of up to 25 knots. Used in liner service between Europe and Asia, the ship with its 23-strong crew calls at its home port of Hamburg every two months. The generation of the "Colombo Express" class includes seven other sister ships. The Hamburg giant is faithfully reproduced in the model with a two-part hull. The ship with its maximum load can be represented by 23 finely engraved container blocks. But even without a load, the deck, which is structured true to the original, the separate lashing bridges and the free-fall lifeboat at the stern give an idea of the gigantic dimensions.
The filigree bridge structures with staircases, the command bridge, the masts and the radar systems are further highlights. The winches and bollards are cast to scale.
