GUNNERA MANICATA, GIANT RHUBARB

This eye-catching monumental garden perennial is undoubtedly one of the largest perennials in the world and can make even a medium-sized garden seem like a mysterious jungle. Huge leaves develop quickly in spring, reaching a diameter of approx. 2 m, and are mounted on 1.8 m long prickly petioles.It reaches these dimensions after 2-3 growing seasons. Its tall, paniculate inflorescences with greenish-orange bracts, appearing in summer, sometimes remain invisible under the huge leaves. Gunnera can be grown in Europe both in the ground and in large containers in winter gardens, conservatories and large glazed terraces. It prefers moist, fertile, permeable soil and likes sunny or semi-shaded conditions. More and more people are successfully taking up the extraordinary challenge of growing this giant. -Aftercare: full sun to part shade and well drained, fertile, humusy soil; hardy to -15C and in colder climates need winter protection with thick layer of mulch (minimum 30 cm) and agrotextile or bubble foil; when the leaves get frosty, they should be cut off (5- 10 cm from the base);
