1907 $20 Wire Edge High Relief St Gaudens Gold Double Eagle
Graded AU55 by PCGS

Pictured is the actual coin offered.

The 1907 Twenty dollar gold double eagle is part of a series of Saint Gaudens gold double eagle coins struck from 1907-1908. The specific variety is High Relief. Struck in Philadelphia and designated as a Business (MS) strike, this coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper from a mintage of 12,367 struck. The 1907 high-relief wire rim $20 was not an intentional variety. Rather, it is the result of -- loose retaining collar and the repeated, high-tonnage blows to bring up the detail on the double eagles -- three to five strikes per coin. Overall, wire rim $20s are two to three times more common than the flat rim $20s. Luster on the wire rim $20s is usually pretty good, and many examples exhibit yellowish-green to copper color.
Obverse: Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.
Reverse: A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
