The work is a collaboration between the Kalevala Society, the Universities of Joensuu, Jyväskylä and Granada, and the Jyväskylä Art Museum. The theme and purpose of the publication are myths that contain and guide our collective images of the world and people. The myths contained in the Kalevala are ingrained in the minds of Finns as myths of Finnishness. This work focuses on the pictorial expression of myths and visual material. These issues are addressed by scholars of myths, the Kalevala, visual arts and visual expression, as well as visual artists who produce new visual material. Thirteen Spanish painters, graphic artists and photographers make works based on and inspired by the poems of the Kalevala.
