Apsley Pellatt

London: David Bogue, 1849. First Edition. Hard Cover. viii, 146 p., 6 leaves of colored plates, illus.; 21.5 cm. Apsley Pellatt IV (1791-1863) of the Falcon Glassworks, Blackfriars, London, was one of the chief innovators of the mid-19th century British glass industry. He learned about the historical techniques of glassmaking by travelling about Europe viewing continental methods at first hand, and by rigorous experimentation. His Curiosities of Glass Making (1849) became an invaluable manual for his glass-making contemporaries. With the bookplate of Josiah Vavasseur, O.B., 1834-1908, noted for engineering hydraulic power in naval gunnery. Bound in three quarter green leather, some foxing to verso of plates and prelims, some age toning to pages, rubbing along board edges, profusely gilt designed spine with gilt lettering on red spine label, marbled text block edges, some handling/scuffing to boards.
