This is a Lionel F-3 Diesel engine Powered A unit (with two motors) and non-powered B unit decorated for the Northern Pacific Railroad. It was illustrated in a 1997 catalogue along with four vista-dome passenger cars. This set is very nearly new. Since they have rested in their boxes for over 25 years they should be oiled if you intend to operate them. I removed them from their boxes for photos and to verify that the power unit properly sequences forward/neutral and reverse and that the light works. A small plastic engineer figure is included in the box. The non-powered unit contains a digital sound system and horn, both of which operate correctly. The boxes show a few signs of wear and include styrofoam inners. I have been unable to locate the original instruction booklet and have photo copied one from another diesel set. Lionel chose a different paint scheme from that used on the passenger cars. Later that year Lionel released a second diesel set with a paint scheme to match the passenger cars. I have listed for sale the set of four passenger cars as well as the later F-3 diesel engines.
