Four images of this 110-year-old book are shown below; it is Volume III from a set of John Burroughs' Works. This book is: Birds and Poets with other Papers, by John Burroughs, Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1913. This book measures 7 3/4" x 5" and is 270 pages. It is in Very Good condition with a former owner's 1914 signature and personal inventory number on the front endpaper and with some gentle wear. There are six, full-page, tissue-guarded illustrations; they are in Fine condition and blank on the reverse. This includes two drawings of birds by L. A. Fuertes, one of which is in color (i.e., please see image #1 below) and three halftone photographs by Herbert W. Gleason. Image #2 below is Gleason's photograph, "Emerson's Home in Concord". There are ten chapters, the final three of which are Burroughs' impressions and thoughts about Walt Whitman, Emerson, and poetry in general and how these relate to his interest in nature and spirituality. The binding is 3/4 leather with its spine lettered and decorated in gilt in the Art Nouveau style (i.e., image #4 below). The book's top page edge is gilt. There is no former-owner's bookplate inside, no foxing, and there are no loose pages. The book will be shipped in a solid new box anywhere in the United States via USPS Media Mail for free.
