Make your own headlight bulbs!

5' Long piece of 1mm plastic filament for lighting locomotives and many other applications. Using some heat shrink tubing, attach this to a 3mm LED, and the end opposite the LED glows brightly. Apply heat to the end and it will blossom and it will look just like a headlight bulb (see picture). I personally use it to replace any lens(es) that came with the loco that I want to illuminate. It is 1mm in diameter, and the end grows to about 1.5mm in size when you apply heat. You usually only need a couple inches per light so 5' will last you for dozens of locos.

I use this filament exclusively for all my Athearn builds, it throws out light so much better than the factory setup! I use two pieces with one LED for double headlights. The pictures include an example of 4 with one LED in an RTR RS-3. Another great thing is you can use a longer piece and locate the bulky LED bulb out of the way if you are having clearance problems. The filament is somewhat flexible and you can bend it to a small degree. It is clear, so it will glow with whatever color of LED you use. I have used it on Athearn Blue Box EMD SD, GP, SW, FM Trainmaster, and various RTR locos too. Not suitable to replace headlight lenses for larger bulbs like what you may find on an EMD F7, ALCO PA, etc. although you could shine it through the existing lens.

Includes 5 feet of 1 mm filament. Does NOT include any LEDs or the locomotives pictured.
