Probably dating from the start of the twentieth century this is a solid cast brass candlestick holder. It is decorated in natural forms of sinuous curves of foliage and floral motifs. The edge of the base is decorated with figure of eight type patterns which resemble fern tendrils unfurling. The well is adorned with feather designs forming a fan around the base of the stem.

The stem itself is embellished with foliate motifs. It has a snake winding its way from the base up towards, but falling short of, the wax pan. The wax pan is in the shape of a sunflower head with its petals forming the border running around its edge.

The sconce is decorated with acanthus leaves and scrollwork decoration.

It does not have a makers mark on it.

It takes a standard sized taper candle as is demonstrated in photographs 1 and 11-12. The candle used in the photographs is not included in the sale.

Condition

It is in good condition for its age with some scuffs and scratches on its body. The stick stands securely and firmly and does not wobble.

It appears to have been ineptly repaired in the past and this is why the stem sits awkwardly on the base. It is solidly fixed in place.

Please see the photographs for an accurate representation of the item's overall condition.

It is approximately 180mm high by 96mm in diameter at its widest.

It weighs approximately 575g

The item comes from a pet free home.
