Mohne Dam, May 1943.

The primary target for the legendary Dambusters raid in May 1943 was the Mohne dam (centre left), which encloses the valley of the Mohne and Hever rivers. It was hoped that by breaching this structure, and the dams on the Eder, Sorpe, Lister and Schwelme Lake, vital water supplies to the industrial heartland of the Ruhr could be disrupted. In the event only the Mohne and Eder were breached, and although the raid interrupted the German war machine for a short time and represented a major propaganda coup for the Allies, its long-term strategic effect was negligible.
