This is a banjo. It is a four-string tenor. It has a very short scale of 20 5/8 inches (most 17 fret tenors have a 21-inch scale).
There is inlay on the headstock in the shape of a lyre. This logo was often used by Stromberg-Voisinet, the company that later became Kay Musical Instruments of Chicago. The headstock shape also identifies it as a Stromberg-Voisinet. The word ‘lyre’ is stamped into the neck rod. It has very nice inlay on the fretboard and has beautify marquetry on the pot. There is a ‘skunk stripe’ on the back of the neck. The head is 11 inches.
The head is a good quality Remo Weather King. The strings are new, and the gauges are; 10, 14, 20w, 30w.
This banjo was probably made in the 1920s, so it may be more than 100 years old. Based on its age, it is being sold as-is.
This banjo appears original, with the following exceptions I can detect: The tailpiece is a modern replacement, but its lug appears original; the bridge is a modern replacement; it has a newer Remo brand head; the tuners are modern replacements; the nut was probably replaced, but appears to be good-quality ebony; three of the tension hooks are modern replacements. There is a center-hole in the stick, so this banjo may have had a resonator.
It is being sold ‘as-is’.

MY SHIPPING POLICIES:
I only ship to the 48 lower states. No international shipping, please don’t ask. I will ship ASAP after your payment clears, but I don't go to the Post Office every day, so keep that in mind. I usually get to the PO by the Thursday following the payment date, or sooner.
See the shipping calculator for shipping cost. I do my best to keep my starting price low, so the bidders can decide the final value. I use the eBay shipping calculator. Please don’t hold it against me for what the USPS charges for shipping. I do not add a handling charge and I do not mark-up the shipping fee charged by USPS.
