Brand: Tiffany & Co.

Design: Japanesque fan pin decorated with an owl designed by Tiffany's chief silverware designer Edward C. Moore in the 1870's. "Richard C. McCormick, the US Commissioner-General to the exposition...noted that the Japanesque style is an outgrowth of [Japanese] subtle appreciation of contrast and effect, and their love of nature, which, with its simple and truthful application of plants, blossoms, flowers and other natural objects, stands in marked contrast to the decorative mannerisms prevailing in Europe." Extract from Tiffany Jewels by John Loring (1999) pg. 85

Authenticity: Signed "Tiffany & Co."; design referenced in Tiffany Jewels by John Loring (1999) pg. 85-86 (see photos 9 & 10)

Acquisitions: Discussed in Tiffany Jewels by John Loring (1999) pg. 85 "A number of European museums, including the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, purchased Tiffany's Japanesque jewelry at the exposition, where the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) also purchased a Japanesque brooch for the Princess of Wales (later Queen Alexandra)."

Comments: A very rare Tiffany & Co. pin possibly presented at the 1878 Paris Exposition. Within the past decade only two pairs of earrings in this style have been sold. The first was sold by Doyle Auctions, USA in 2011 for US$13,750 and the second pair by Rago Auctions, USA in 2018 for US$7,500 (see photos 11 & 12)
