The handle of the crumb tray is mother of pearl with a curved design, making it comfortable to hold. The inner side of the handle has a cross hatched design in the mother of pearl. The handle falls to an ornate collar with a fan and leaf shaped design, an etched circular joint which leads down to a foliage design where the handle meets the pan of the crumb tray. The pan is decorated with an etched design of grape vines. The side and back edge of the pan have an ornate pierced metal rococo style design.

The item is unmarked as silver plate but the appearance, weight and wear in places indicates that it is silver plate. This would certainly fit with the luxuriant design and the use of mother of pearl for the handle. This is a wonderful example of a high Victorian piece of tableware.

Condition:

The item is in very good condition for a Victorian item. There is tarnish and wear to the silver plating, indicating that the item has been well used. There is a tiny break in the pierced surround of the tray (photo 12). There is possibly a small crack to the mother of pearl handle, although this may simply be a flaw to the nacre (photo 13). Neither of these impact the integrity of the piece.
