“Jiu Jitsu Complete” written by Kiyose Nakae 1958 fifth Edition.

Nakae's 63-year-old "Jiu-Jitsu Complete" offers a comprehensive crash course. Many of the throws are recognizable from their incorporation into Judo. The book published four years before Nakae's death at age 79.

Nakae's work outlines tumbling, discusses balance points and breaking balance, then plunges into defenses against common holds and attacks. Interestingly, he offers variations throughout and the movements progress from the basics. Included are a number of breaks, effective ways to perform oft-maligned joint locks, some basic strikes that don't depend on size or strength, and positioning.

Note that this is primarily a self-defense manual, intended for the crash of a regular conflict or surprise assault. The illustrations depict entries, variations, and the lessons build progressively. However, there is little on grip fighting. This, however, is tied to old Jujutsu, which is thematically similar to catch-as-catch can. If it's available, grab it, lock it up, proceed to takedown. (Much of today's Jujutsu, available in the West, consists of "Aiki" variants blended with karate punches and kicks.) The book also features a number of chokes and strangles rarely practiced.

Condition Dust jacket has tear at top/bottom of spine and wear on both front/back edges. Book is in Excellent condition.
