This is a RARE and valuable collector's item that would be a great addition to any antique collection. The extraordinary, very large and beautiful 22" X 21" Valencian group figurine depicts a horse and a couple seated on its back. They….the mounted couple and the horse itself are depicted in very colourful display of dressing up for a special and joyous occasion…The hand painting is exceptional and the lifelike form of the horse and riders are very eye catching, WITH NUMEROUS OUTSTANDING FEATURES. The dress of the Senorita with the scalloped apron and sweetly crossed ankles and black shoes with the golden Pieneta, a head comb that ladies of nobility wore during the 1800’s. The horse’s tail has been cropped and tied and along with the other amazing features of colourful adornment they mix and match very well with the attire of the the riding couple.

Antonio Peyró has been one of the most representative figures of the decorative arts to the first meitat of the century.

It is a tract of a ceramic sculpture that represents a Valencian ballerina ballant la dansa de la Xàquera Vella, the piece is enamelled and decorated with colours ceràmics a l'aigua, signed in the peu and the base, it is the work of the prestigious ceramist Antonio Peyró Mezquita, nascut to Onda in 1882 and died in Valencia in 1954.

The Valencian ceramist Antonio Peyró presented the APM with a polychrome earthenque sculpture of a couple of young people dressed in the Valencian regional costume characteristic of their pieces, where figures of naturalistic style of a decorative character predominate, with a prominent influence of women as the protagonist. The press of the time echoed the donation:

"The illustrious artist Antonio Peyró Mezquita has given the Press Association, and yesterday she was admired in the new palace of this entity, a beautiful pottery of those that have appeared in its recent Exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art." (ABC, April 8, 1930).

Antonio Peyró (1884-1954) called by experts La “Sorolla” de la céramique, was characterised by his unmistakeable personal style, with a splendid decoration and the rich colour of his works, for which he obtained great national recognition of his work. He donated for charitable purposes other sculptures such as the "Old lizard doing labour" appearing among the prizes that would be raffled at the traditional Press Dance held in 1935.

Peineta (comb)

Place of origin Spain

Introduced 19th century

A peineta is a large female head ornament held to the hair by a row of teeth and usually worn under a mantilla, or lace covering the head, traditional in Spain and the rest of the Hispanic world.[1]

The hair ornament, worn by women, consists of a convex body and a set of teeth that affix it to hair worn in a bun. The peineta was once made of tortoise shell, but is now usually made of synthetic materials such as acrylic or plastic.[2]

The origin of the peineta goes back to the 19th century in Spain, but there is evidence of its use on the Iberian Peninsula as early as the 5th century BCE and in other areas from the 17th century. It is used today primarily during special occasions such as weddings, bullfights, Holy Week processions, and traditional performances of flamenco music.

Between the mid-1820s and the mid-1830s, the fashion for a new type of headpiece known as peinetón—derived from the Spanish peineta—became widespread among elite women in the Río de la Plata cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, and had a great impact on the society of the time.[3][4] Peinetones were characterized by their overly large size, measuring up to 120 centimetres (3 feet 11 inches) in height and width at the height of their popularity.[5]

The peineta is usually worn with a mantilla, a veil worn over the head and shoulders. The mantilla is also a common element of some Valencian and Andalusian costumes.

In some countries, such as Chile, it is known as peinetas a los peines, while in the Philippines it is referred to as payneta, often much smaller than its Iberian ancestor and may be bejewelled or made of gold.
