Hand-painted, glazed terra cotta block or tile depicting a passalacqua, or a porter, carrying a wealthy gentleman on his back over water.

Block is approximately 11.75” by 6”.

This item was originally hung using a plate hanger. It is quite heavy (5 lbs).

The painting appears to be based on, or is very similar to, a 19th century illustration found in the Raccolta di Costumi Napoletani, or Collection of Neapolitan Costumes. A copy of this original illustration is included, for reference only.

Exact date and origin is unknown, however based on the original collection, I believe this to be vintage.
