You are bidding on a huge original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal.

It depicts Martin Luther being taken prisoner in the Thuringia Forest by Saxon Knights, to be transported to Wartburg. Martin Luther was a German monk, priest, professor of theology and iconic figure of the Protestant Reformation.

It takes place in the Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald in German),  a mountain range in the southern parts of the German state of Thuringia, running northwest to southeast between the valley of the river Werra near Eisenach and the Thuringian-Vogtlandian Slate Mountains. The geographical boundary with the latter range follows approximately a line from Gehren via Großbreitenbach to Schönbrunn near Schleusingen, defined by the rivers Schleuse and Neubrunn on the southwestern slope, and Talwasser, Wohlrose and Möhre on the northeastern slope.

It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately 22 x 16 inches (56 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. There is unrelated text/photos on the back of this print.

The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. Note that the fold line is clean and undamaged, because it was "tipped" into the binding. This was a luxury binding technique of that era, because the double page prints were free of binding holes down the center.
