The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway had a simple twin pavilion design in stone that was widely used in the 1860s. Opened in 1863, New Hey on the Oldham loop line of the L&YR remained in use until recent closure for the extension of the Manchester Metrolink. St Thomas's church (I 876-7, H. Lloyd), an imposing structure of local sandstone, and the earlier school below it still survive but the workmanlike buildings which fitted well into their surroundings had gone years earlier
