A showpiece in many bookcases: the book “Dondi White, Stylemaster General, The Life of Graffiti Artist Dondi White”. Written by Andrew “ZEPHYR” Witten and Michael White. Published by Harper Collins Publishers in 2001.

Anyone who has this book in his or her possession considers himself lucky because of the historical value it has. The book, on 194 pages, depicts the life of this graffiti great in images and text. The influence that Dondi has during his life (1961-1998) on the New York graffiti scene, the (international) art world and the international graffiti scene is enormous. His iconic graffiti paintings from the “Children Of the Grave” series on the New York subway trains are a source of inspiration for graffiti writers worldwide. Various European museums exhibited his work on canvas and paper and include the work in their permanent collection. Something that is almost non-existent even nowadays, where graffiti is much more accepted.

In addition to numerous photos of (subway) graffiti, this book contains many photos of sketches and canvases, stories by fellow writers, an interview from 1995 and tons of other fascinating material … The textual contributions of Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper, among others, make it clear once again how encounters with Dondi determined their own lives and careers and contributed to the creation of the book “Subway Art”.
