Helen S. Goodall & Ella Goodall Cooper

A worn reading or working copy. The covers and spine show wear, stains and chipping. Except for a couple of pencil notations, the interior remains clean and the hinges are tight.

Helen Goodall became one of the earliest American Baha'is when she declared in 1898. Her daughter Ella Cooper learned of the Baha'i Faith from a niece of Phoebe Hearst. Helen Goodall helped establish the Baha'i Faith on the west coast of the United States and in Hawaii, and served on the first national administrative Baha'i body in the USA, the Baha'i Temple Unity.

Abdu’l-Baha spoke highly of her, and she was able to accompany him often during his visit to the United States in 1912. She was posthumously named a Disciple of Abdu’l-Baha by Shoghi Effendi.

Mother and daughter went on Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1908. Of these early Pilgrimages, Shoghi Effendi wrote:

“I can never hope to interpret adequately the feelings that surged within those heroic hearts as they sat at their Master’s feet, beneath the shelter of His prison-house, eager to absorb and intent to preserve the effusions of His divine Wisdom. I can never pay sufficient tribute to that spirit of unyielding determination which the impact of a magnetic personality and the spell of a mighty utterance kindled in the entire company of these returning pilgrims, these consecrated heralds of the Covenant of God, at so decisive an epoch of their history. The memory of such names as Lua, Chase, MacNutt, Dealy, Goodall, Dodge, Farmer and Brittingham — to mention only a few of that immortal galaxy now gathered to the glory of Baha’u’llah — will for ever remain associated with the rise and establishment of His Faith in the American continent."

In a Tablet to one of the friends Abdu’l-Baha wrote of the services of Mrs. Cooper and her mother, Mrs. Goodall:

“Thou hadst written concerning the services of Mrs. Goodall and Mrs. Cooper. These two dear maid-servants of God are truly two shining candles, and in character are unique and matchless. They sacrifice their lives in the pathway of God under conditions of hardship and trouble and are filled with spirituality and good cheer. It is certain that the divine confirmations will encircle them.”
