Chinese yam, 山药, Dioscorea opposita, is a nutritious vine native to East Asia.

Its tuberous roots are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, valued for promoting digestion and boosting immunity. Used in traditional Chinese medicine, it's prized for tonifying the spleen, nourishing the kidneys, and replenishing Qi.

Commonly cooked in soups and stir-fries or desserts, it's also incorporated into herbal remedies.

To grow, plant tubers horizontally in well-draining soil in late spring, providing support for vines to climb. Best grow in large pot for easier harvesting of the yams later. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged, and harvest tubers in fall after foliage dies back. Store in a cool, dry place for future use.
