Cathayornis sp.

Age: Early Cretaceous
Locality: Liaoning Province, China
Formation: Jiufotang Formation
Matrix size: 28.1 x 25.3cm
Bird size: 16.8cm

This is a full-body skeleton fossil of Cathayornis, the most representative Mesozoic bird fossil found in Liaoning Province, China. The jiufotang formation, the matrix where fossils are preserved, is a layer composed of soft volcanic ash particles and is known as a representative lagerstättein which even soft tissues and feathers are preserved. For this reason, it is almost the only area where bird feathers, which are usually difficult to find as fossils, are found in a perfectly preserved state.

This is a specimen that was delicately excavated. Because the matrix in which the bird was preserved was very weak, the edges and back were reinforced using epoxy and wooden boards. Some customers have taken issue with this and requested a refund. This is the same method used in Solnhofen or Wyoming and does not affect the value or authenticity of the fossil.

* It is suspected that restoration was done to the head and cervical vert.
* Preserved with the fish together, Lycoptera is one of the abundant fish that thrived and fossilized in Yixian formation. The existence of this fish shows that the bird sank rapidly after its death and preserved in good shape.

* We guarantee the authenticity of the fossil. If there is a problem, a refund is possible, but the buyer is fully responsible for any problems with the local customs of the recipient's country.
