Hat Band Holiday, 2 day advanced intermediate class taught by Mary Ellen Searcy, USA, 1996

Another unique class piece designed by Mary Ellen Searcy.
Photo shows this finished as a hat band but the directions also suggest finishing it "as a belt, attached over the shoulder of a jacket or vest, or a "doubled" bell pull". It would also make a striking necklace with the "concho" as the centerpiece with some adjustments.

The main long rectangular band has been barely started with some Rhodes stitches. See photos.
There are no needles or fibers included.

Kit includes

  • 18 count mono white canvas with edges covered (approx 25' x 4") stapled on 14" x 5" stretcher bars - barely started
  • Another piece of 18 count mono white canvas (approx 6" x 6") stapled on 6" x 6" stretcher bars - unstarted for making a separate concho with penciled in concho circle
  • Color photos
  • 48 pages of stitching instructions
  • Master chart and many other diagrams
  • Stitch diagrams
  • 13" x 1.5" piece of ecru lace
  • Assorted metal and plastic rings/washers with 2 metal bells/closures? and a few seed beads
Stitches include framed Rhodes, Rhodes diamonds, tent, upright cross, vertical satin, binding, raised spider, raised star, buttonhole, meadering bargello, and reversed Scotch diamonds.

Techniques include laying fibers, beading, tassels, 3-dimensional stitches, needleweaving, wrapped washers, wrapped sleeves, twisted cord (Monks cord), and various fringes.

There's a lot to learn from this piece. It's quite striking and beautiful with lots and lots and lots of diagrams and instructions including making tassels and twisted cords.

Proceeds to Needlework Guild of MN.
