COSMONAUTICS. 1985 ENCYCLOPEDIA EDITED BY SPACE PROGRAM CHIEF DESIGNER GLUSHKO

Reference and terminological publication for those who are interested in rocketry and cosmonautics, with black and white illustrations in the text and color illustrations on separate sheets.

The encyclopedia, which includes about 2,000 articles, covers the history and modern problems of rocket science and cosmonautics, provides biographies of its pioneers, scientists and designers - creators of space technology, Soviet and foreign cosmonauts. The encyclopedia is designed for a wide range of readers.

The general editor of this publication, Valentin Glushko, the Soviet engineer and scientist in the field of rocket and space technology was one of the pioneers of rocket and space technology, the founder of Soviet liquid-propellant rocket engine construction. He worked as the Chief Designer of space systems since 1974, general designer of the reusable rocket and space complex Energia-Buran, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences since 1958. In 1929-1934 he headed the Hydrodynamic Laboratory - Experimental Design Bureau, where, under his leadership, prototypes of the world's first electrothermal rocket engine were created, and since 1930 - a large number of liquid rocket engines. Powerful liquid-propellant rocket engines of Glushko's design were installed on most first and second stages of Soviet launch vehicles and many combat missiles. They ensured the launch of the first Soviet artificial Earth satellites into orbit, the flights of Gagarin and other Soviet cosmonauts, and the launches of automatic interplanetary stations to the Moon and planets of the Solar System. Heading the Energia corporation in 1974-1989 as General Designer and being Chairman of the Council of Chief Designers, he provided general management of the work of numerous enterprises and organizations on key projects related to Soviet manned space exploration.
