Bidding on RARE ANTIQUE THERMOPLASTIC PHOTO CASE with a gold metal mat designed to hold a (1/4) quarter plate DAUGUERROTYPE or TINTYPE PHOTO.  The frame was probably produced in the 1850's and the tintype could be a little later.    The frame measures 5.25 x 6.25 inches on the outside and the tintype is approx. 4.25 x 3.25" which makes it what is called a 1/4 plate in size.       These frames were developed like the "union cases" that held dauguerrotypes and tintypes in 1/16 plate size of 1.25 x 1.50" to full plate size of 6.25 x 8.25".   Referred to as "gutta percha" but in fact are "thermoplastic".
Someone has taken the image out of the frame and put it back in upside down - a hook is on the back. I made no attempt to take the frame apart for fear of damaging.  Hopefully you will find some info about the maker of the frame under the image.
The tintype has an unusual surface which has a uniform "crackled" look which I have never seen - not chipped - don't know if it was a special process or just something else about which I know nothing. You will be buying this for the frame anyway which is perfect - all corners good - no chips or cracks.   The back has slight wear.

Beautiful frame design and nice tintype subject as well.  Don't see these frames especially in this fine condition.
