A rare and unusual Tartanware dip pen / pencil case lined with zinc or a tin alloy.
The case has 8 compartments for dip pens/ pencils/ writing instruments.
The foil/ zinc/ tin alloy lining would have stopped any residual ink seeping through the wood.
You can see the ‘foil’ lining of the lid has been rubbed from the contact with the nibs/ points.
It measures 5” x 2⅝ x 1½“.
There is a handwritten inscription on the inside which reads’ Harry Lovell’ – A gift of A.U.’.
I think the tartan covering may be ‘Stewart Camel’ which has a beige base colour;
the external lacquer/ varnish makes the paper look darker.
The case/ box is solid and the lid fits tightly.
It is in good condition with any wear in keeping with age and use;
there are two small cracks on the inner ‘collar’;
one small crack on one of the compartments; rubs/ scuffs externally.
Please see all the photos as they form part of the description.
