This is a selection of original A4 sheets taken from the Daily Control logs produced by WR Control in Swindon, for the period November 26th to December 20th 1989, plus 1 page from January 1997. The 12 sheets are in very good condition.

They include all sorts of incidents reported on a daily basis - such as loco failures in traffic, delays, and so on, and how the incidents were resolved and the outcomes.

A selection of pages are included to illustrate how the info was produced.

For example, included in this batch is the loco failure at Bruton on January 21st 1997, and the time taken to rescue the stricken train, a Westbury to Weymouth class 37 loco hauled train, which took 6 hours to be rescued!

There is also a daily list of HST issues such as 43188 shut down on 1A09 and requiring loco assistance, low power faults and coolant leaks.

The incident list for 27/11 provides a more detailed explanation of the issue on 1A09 above.
Also includes services running as loco-hauled vice HST.

The daily list of DMU resource problems for the 28/11 includes details on 2C64 cancelled due to seized final drive on set L832 and other amended services.

The Loco Difficulties in Traffic to 6am report dated 29/11 includes details on 47587 failing on 1F21 and being assisted by 37012 as far as Reading. This is handwritten and records the problems as they are reported in realtime.

The Daily log on 29/11 records more info on the 1F21 loco failure, and a later page records the difficulties with 1V94 Birmingham to Paddington - with the loco hauled set red-carded, a 3 car DMU running as 1Z94 was procured, however, this failed at Oxford.

Of major interest is the log report dated December 9th which provides plenty of details regarding the collision when class 158 Sprinter 1F08 ran into the back of 1B10 0830 HST Paddington to Cardiff Central inside the Severn Tunnel.

The lengthy entry reports the many diversions and revisions to services required to keep passengers moving. It also details the actions by the emergency services, the use of rescue trains to get trapped passengers out, and other trains utilised to recover the damaged HST power car and the sprinter unit.

A fascinating look at what goes on in the day at a regional control office.

These Control Logs are of great historical value, showing how BR reported and reacted to events as they happened.
