These exquisite Guignol hand puppets  are rare in Australia, believed to originate from Lyon France in the late 1800's. All are in exceptional condition for their age, the clothes are a little tatty and the policeman has an arm missing.

A little history on Guignol:
Dating from the mid-nineteenth century, this rare collection of hand puppets were originally used in the small Lyonnais theaters that were in parks and public gardens. Lyon was famous for the Théâtre le Guignol - a puppet theatre that was founded in 1808 by Laurent Mourguet, a puppeteer. The heads are made from paper mâché and are hand painted.
