Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) - sometimes known as Rio Rosewood - is found in the Atlantic coast forests of Eastern Brazil south of Rio de Janiero. It was formerly the premier timber for the highest class of cabinetwork and musical instruments from its introduction in the 16th century until its commercial demise in the mid-20th century.

Unsustainable overcutting eventually led to its protection under CITES I in 1991 when all felling was stopped and this remains the case to the present day to allow remaining forests to regenerate. The only timber permitted for use now is that from reclaimed sources and these examples have been recovered from antique furniture made at least a century pre-1991 so sale of the material is permitted but NOT overseas export.

Brazilian rosewood is now almost a mythical timber, highly desired for its beauty and excellent physical characteristics - it is a musical tone wood par excellence - but supplies of course are almost non-existent and such vanishing rarity causes it to command very high prices. It cost me a great deal of money.

The colour can vary somewhat and these examples illustrate the classic appearance ; a rich, dark purplish-brown with beautiful black veinings that sometimes arrange themselves into a classic spider web figure. Needless to say, it turns and polishes with utmost ease.

A once-in-lifetime opportunity to obtain this iconic and legendary timber.

In order to offset the cost you will receive three additional blanks of other species free of charge
