Decolite is my custom drum brand using vintage hardware from the traps
and swing eras. I aim to make fully giggable drums using the best parts
of vintage drum engineering. Each drum is one of a kind.
This drum is made from an unidentified deep marching shell from the 1900s or 1910s. The shell was cut to 5-inch depth and the original solid maple rering was reset. Only tiny holes were plugged from the original drum, most were cut out when the depth was altered. The bearing edges are original, very smooth roundovers. Finish is black and gold paint with lacquer in a two-tone fade.
Hardware is mostly vintage and mostly chrome, and includes a modified 60s Premier strainer, 50s Gretsch parade butt plate, modified Vespe cocktail drum tube lugs, and 60s Pearl tension rods. The rims are modern 2.3mm triple flange parts with holes drilled for the snare wire cords.
This drum has a low fundamental, with lots of body and lots of sustain. Video of the snare in action can be seen here.
