This volume is intended to he not so much a survey of a sampler as a statement about the comic book at its best. Most of our choices are here because of our own convictions about their quality. We considered several thousand stories to make these selections. To state the criteria for the selection process to a few words would be difficult, but we can say that we have compiled works whose creators have made use of the medium itself –who have made their words and pictures work together to achieve results not possible in any other medium. All of the features in this book are comic-book originals.
