SILVER FRAMED DOCUMENT HOLDER. A GIFT FROM LEONID BREZHNEV TO TODOR ZHIVKOV.

This document holder was a gift from the hands of Leonid Brezhnev (General Secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR from 1964 to 1982) to the hands of Todor Zhivkov (President of Bulgaria) on the 30th anniversary of the "People's Republic of Bulgaria".

President Leonid Brezhnev had ultimate authority over the entire USSR. Well known for his extreme conservative stagnation, respect of the status quo, and for building up the largest and most feared military arsenal the world had ever seen. His time in office was noted for many special gifts to the leaders of the satellite states of the UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS. Who else but Leonid Brezhnev would give a table-statue composed entirely of pure solid gold as a gift? At one time Todor Zhivkov motioned that Bulgaria merge to become a state of the Soviet Union but this was seen as being unnecessary since Bulgaria had long been working as a unified and effective state of the Soviet Empire as it was. The USSR had reserved the right to interfere in all internal affairs of its satellites and they appreciated that Bulgaria had always been respectful of this condition tied to their constant assistance and unwavering support from Soviet Russia.

The solid all-silver frame on the front of the document holder looks as though it may have been taken from an old Russian plaque. The leafy-floral golden patterns are heavily gold-plated. The center hand-carved bust of Lenin is  the real thing, smooth, thick and solid. The inside is finely lined and padded with red silk.

It is solid and very sturdy, weighing 1.6-kg. It measures 31.5cm x 22cm folded, and 31.5cm x 45.2cm opened.
