This is a beautiful Sugar Bowl with Lid, made by the famous china manufacturer Spode, formerly Copeland Spode. The pattern is called Maritime Rose Blue, because it also was made with a yellow background and a pink background. The design is absolutely stunning, with a periwinkle blue background, accented with a raised or embossed white floral design and the white bone china decorated with lovely pink roses and rose buds. If you like fine china, the color blue, and pink roses, this Sugar Bowl is lovely! It would be stunning displayed or to use when having tea or coffee with friends.

The Sugar Bowl holds 2 cups, stands about 4 inches tall, and is 4 & 1/2 inches long. It is in excellent vintage shape with no chips, cracks or crazing and I see no wear on the gold either.

This piece has no date stamped on the bottom, but the teacups and saucers that go went with this piece are stamped 1954, so these probably made around then also. The green backstamp under the glaze on the bottom of the creamer and on the inside of the lid is “Spode Copeland China England”.

I also have listed a creamer in the same pattern if you are interested. The last picture shows them together. Please note the blue on the sugar bowl is not as intense as the blue on the creamer.

Over 250 years ago the company was founded in 1770 by Josiah Spode, and the factory was set up in the heart of the Potteries – Stoke-on-Trent. Josiah Spode worked on the development of a new form of porcelain, originally calling it ‘Stoke China’, before establishing the name we know today as “Bone China”.

Spode was managed by the Copeland Family and both names were on pieces from 1847-1970. Starting around 1970, the brand name reverted to the name Spode only.
