Honore Daumier - a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century. Daumier produced over 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 wood engravings, 1000 drawings and 100 sculptures. A prolific draftsman, he was perhaps best known for his caricatures of political figures and satires on the behavior of his countrymen...
Acquired
from the estate of George Longstreet, a renown collector of fine
original illustrations and prints, and whose collection has appeared in
dozens of museums and exhibits over the last four decades. In 1976,
Armand Hammer acquired 5000 Daumier objects that George Longstreet began
to amass in Paris more than 50 years ago. The Daumier collection is now
part of the permanent collection in the Armand Hammer Wing of the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art.
