The tightly woven material, known as 'Jungle Cloth', protected the bodies of deck crew members exposed to cold winds at sea. Early model deck jackets had a zipper as the opening/closing part in the front, but the salt in the seawater easily caused rust, so later models were changed to a hook type. Additionally, the opening/closing hook of this jacket uses a very rare pressed copper plate secured with rivets.
