The Saint-Louis Institute is a French-language secular diocesan free education institute founded in 1858 in the Marais district of Brussels.

Although originally common[unclear], the Saint-Louis university faculties became independent in 1948, the institute ultimately containing only the non-university part.
Chronological benchmarks

    1838: establishment in Mechelen of a “School of Commerce and Industry”1., placed under the patronage of Saint Louis de Gonzague.
    1858: foundation in Brussels in the hotel of Baron Jean-Jacques Verseyden de Varick located in the Marais district of the Saint-Louis Institute, the result of the transfer from Mechelen to Brussels of the “School of Commerce and Industry” and the creation of a Catholic course. Opening of classes: Tuesday October 5, 1858.
    1859: opening of a professional first class (corresponding in the current system to a first class), start of the technical humanities section.
    1865: creation of the preparatory section (corresponding in the current system to the primary cycle).
    1890: the carpentry course is established as a reference course and has the ability to award endemic grades.
    1914-1918: 237 pupils, students, teachers or staff members lost their lives during the First World War.
    1922: July 29, inauguration of the monument to students who died for their country during the First World War, in the presence of Cardinal Mercier and His Royal Highness Prince Charles.
    1924: creation of a Practical Institute of Commerce.
    1925: creation of a School of Practical and Religious Presences.
    1927: annexation of the Saint-Josse Institute established at rue de Verviers Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
    1929: opening of a new school in Zellick, on the premises of a country house bequeathed to the Institute.
    1933: celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Institute at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in the presence of Their Majesties King Albert and Queen Elizabeth as well as Cardinal Van Roey and Paul Claudel, French Ambassador.
