Wonderful old world style religious realism achieved within this beautifully inspired glorious artwork by artist "Toby Rosenthal, Munich, 1908" (lower left corner) .. seen in last photo. Unable to read middle initial.
Young male artisan seen chipping away at his nearly completed religious statue of The Virgin Mary, or holy Madonna. His inspiration model rests nearby, a small replica statue & set of early woodwork hand carving tools. Entire gamet of colors are evenly muted, providing an old world masterful display of religious realism. Young boy has carved divine healing hands .. could he be recreating the vision of The Our Lady of Mercy, The Virgin Mary, who is believed to have divinely appeared within the (now world famous) grotto near Lourdes, France .. & performed miraculous healings .. the basis for the much later movie about an innocent, religious young French girl, Bernadette (played by Jennifer Jones) who, in 1858, saw a vision of the Virgin Mary and discovered a healing spring at Lourdes, in "Song of Bernadette" .. a deeply inspirational, powerfully moving classic drama.
Loss exists along edges with a few superficial small white spots under the Madonna's lower hand & a greater area under the small tabletop Madonna, a light crease & few other areas seen when artwork is tilted, manipulated to catch bright light. Areas can be conserved professionally or lightly hand tinted. A suitable wide frame would cover the edge loss nicely.
