Performer Notes:
- Personnel: Kitty Wells (vocals, guitar).
- Kitty Wells was among the few traditional country stars of the '50s to continue having hits well into the '70s, after pure country had been leavened with orchestras, pop covers, and the other accouterments of the "countrypolitan" style. From her first big hit, an angry and somewhat controversial answer-record to the now-obscure Hank Thompson weeper "The Wild Side of Life" called "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels," Wells gracefully matured from a trailblazing firestormer into "The Queen of Country Music," one who influenced later performers like Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and in her early days, Dolly Parton. GREATEST SONGS is a well-chosen though disappointingly brief compilation of many of Wells' best tracks, including that first hit, which serves as a useful introduction to her long and fruitful career.
