For sale is a beautiful pair of Classic Antique Central Plains, likely Arapaho, Beaded Moccasins, from circa the 1860s.

The moccasins are made of native tanned hide, all sinew sewn, with rawhide soles. The uppers are decorated with Venetian beads, in typical Central Plains designs, all sinew sewn, in bead colors greasy yellow, medium blue, dark blue, light blue, pony trader blue, red-white-heart, and some greasy green.

Clear signs of use. Overall good condition. Hide is on the stiff side but flexible. Seam is loose at heel of right moccasin. See pictures for all that. A good pair of 1860s moccasins!

The moccasins measure each circa 9 1/2" x 3 1/2".

PROVENANCE: these moccasins decended in the family of Lewis V. Bogy, Commissioner of Indian Affairs from November 1866 to March 1867. When Bogy was in office, the famous Fetterman Fight took place and the treaty with several Dakota tribes was concluded to establish o.a. the Devil's Lake Dakota reservation. Bogy is seen on the famous Gardner photograph from 1867 in front of the White House in Washington (DC) with president Andrew Johnson and a large group of o.a. Dakota (Yankton) and Lakota (Two Kettle, BrulĂ©, and Miniconjou) chiefs.

Interesting fact is that Bogy's brother Charles Bogy as a special agent for the BIA met Arapaho and Cheyenne delegates at Fort Zarah in October 1866.
