Dating from the first half of the twentieth century this is an intricately carved Indian walnut cigarette box or trinket box. It features an ornately carved pierced panel with interlocking floral and foliate designs set into the lid. The rest of the lid and the side of the box also feature carving depicting similar patterns in tiny detail.

The lid of the box is hinged. Inside the lid a fan pattern has been carved at each corner. This pattern is repeated on the base of the box. The inside the box it has a raised lip topped with a carved saw-tooth pattern. The box is also divided in two.

Condition

The box is in very good condition. The carved panel set into the lid has some tiny losses to the carving but nothing noticeable. There are also three small hairline splits in the carving which again are only noticeable when taking a very close look at the carving. The panel has bowed slightly at its left and right edges. This can be seen in photographs 6 and 9.

The box has no noticeable scuffs, scratches and marks on its body. These are a small number visible on its base.

Inside the box there are a number of stains which appear to be ink.

Surprisingly for an item of its age there are no splits or cracks in the box itself. The hinges are solid and the lid closes correctly and securely.

There are no signs of woodworm in the box.
