This note was issued on 14 July 2005, the first day of the 2005 Open Golf Championship at St Andrews, and celebrated the remarkable career of RBS Ambassador Jack Nicklaus, who won the Open three times, including twice at St Andrews. It was the first British banknote to feature a living non-royal person. Special features included:

  • images of Nicklaus holding the Claret Jug and playing a shot on his way to victory in 1978
  • the clubhouse at St Andrews
  • Nicklaus's winning scores at St Andrews in 1970 and 1978
  • a card of the St Andrews course for the 2005 Open
  • Nicklaus's Golden Bear logo and the serial number prefix JWN, standing for Jack William Nicklaus.

The bank note comes in official RBS commemorative display packaging / booklet.

A commemorative five-pound note created in honour of Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus is only the third person after the Queen and Queen Mother to be honoured this way in their lifetime.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) issued two million of the notes bearing the image of the 65-year-old, w

Nicklaus, whose 18 major wins make him the most successful golfer in history, will tee off in his final major this week at St Andrews - scene of two of his three British Open triumphs.

He said he was "deeply honoured" as the note was formally unveiled in the Fife town at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club.

RBS director Howard Moody said: "Jack Nicklaus is not only the gold standard to which other golfers have been measured but he is one of the greatest sporting icons there's ever been."

As well as his three Open victories, Nicklaus also landed six Masters titles plus four US Opens and five USPGAs.

"I think this honour is unbelievable. It's something I have a hard time describing," Nicklaus said.

"When RBS approached me and said 'Jack, we'd like to put you on the five-pound note', I was deeply honoured. It's one of the most memorable honours of my career."

A GENUINE GIBRALTAR ROUND £1 COIN - "150TH ANNIVERSAR OF THE OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP" (2022) UNCIRCULATED COMMEMORATIVE COIN

NEW Round Pound coin celebrates The 150th Open Championship

It’s been 6 years since the Round Pounds were phased out and replaced by the new 12-sided coin, marking the end of an era for UK coinage. But today it has returned for a very special occasion.

This Round Pound has been issued in 2022 to celebrate The Open — the oldest golfing competition in the world. Founded in 1860, the 2022 Championship marks The 150th Open, held at The Old Course, St Andrews it’s expected to be the largest in the Championship’s history, with record breaking attendance.

Fully Approved by The R&A

Issued by the Government of Gibraltar and fully approved by The R&A, the reverse design features The Open 150th logo upon a golf ball patterned background with the brand line Everything has led to this’ alongside the denomination ONE POUND. The obverse features the Raphael Maklouf engraving of Queen Elizabeth II.

Struck to the UK Round Pound Specification

Struck to an unblemished Brilliant Uncirculated finish, the preferred quality for collectors, this coin is housed in a bespoke prestation card to protect its superior quality.

What’s more, it’s the exact same size and weight as the UK’s Round Pound — which hasn’t been seen since 2016.

And unlike the UK, you can still find round pounds in circulation in Gibraltar. They’re used daily as part of their currency so it’s not uncommon to find them in your change over there. We don’t yet have confirmation on whether this coin will enter circulation in Gibraltar, but if it does — that will increase the collectability even more.

High-Demand Expected, Act Now!

These coins are expected to be snapped up quickly by serious collectors.  Make sure you don’t miss your opportunity to mark this special occasion by securing your very own ‘The 150th Open Gibraltar Round Pound’ today.
